Obituary

Manville, NJ-Atopere "Sandy" Filippini, 81, died peacefully on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at Bridgeway Care Center in Bridgewater, NJ, with his family at his side. Sandy was born in Plains, PA, and was the son of the late Alfio and Teresa Filippini. In 1956, Sandy married Joan Saba of Wilkes Barre, PA, and in 1958 they moved to Manville.

Sandy was a chemist with the GAF Corporation for 35 years. He received his BS degree in Chemistry from Scranton University. Sandy served in the United States Army and was a veteran of the Korean War. He served for 51 years on the Board of Trustees of the Manville Public Library, was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2290 in Manville and was the Treasurer of American Legion Post# 304 in Manville, receiving the American Legion Lifetime Membership award in 2010. Sandy was also the Treasurer of the Manville Senior Citizens Club and served on the Borough's Shade Tree Commission. He was a parishioner of Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church in Manville and was actively involved in the parish life. Sandy and his late wife, Joan, frequently ran spaghetti dinners to benefit various groups within the community. Sandy was an avid fisherman and hunter and enjoyed taking frequent fishing trips with his friends.

Sandy was predeceased by his wife Joan and brothers Leo and Homer. He is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Jean Filippini of New York City, NY, Terry Filippini of Bridgewater, NJ, and Jill and Todd Peterson of Manville, NJ. He is also survived by his beloved grandsons, David and Todd Peterson. He leaves behind many cherished relatives and dear friends. Sandy will be greatly missed by his community, his church and the people around him.

Relatives and friends are invited to gather at the Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835, on Wednesday, July 13th beginning at 9:00 a.m. Funeral services will begin 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home and continue at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church, 605 Washington Avenue, Manville, NJ 08835 at 10:30a.m.

Sandy will be laid to rest, beside his wife, at Ss. Peter & Paul Orthodox Church Cemetery in Hillsborough.

Visiting hours are Tuesday, July 12th from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. with Fr. James Parsells officiating the Panikhida at 7:30 p.m.
