Manville, NJ- Edward G. Scagliotta, Ph.D., 90, of Manville, NJ died on March 21, 2018 at home with loving family by his side.

At Bound Brook High School from which he graduated in 1945 Dr. Scagliotta was a varsity member of the football and track teams and a member of the school Service Squad.  Immediately upon graduation he entered the US Navy serving aboard the light cruiser USS Huntington, CL 107 for the duration of World War II.  He was a member of the U.S. Cruiser Sailors Association, Sampson WW-2 Navy Veterans, American Legion Post 1000 and the U.S. Navy Memorial.

Dr. Scagliotta received both a bachelor and master's degree in education from Rutgers University and a doctorate degree in supervision and administration of special education from Southeastern University.  In the public school system of Branchburg Township he served as teacher of grades five through eight and building principal of the Fairview School in Neshanic where in addition to his professional assignments he was responsible for stoking the building furnace and maintaining the outhouses.

In 1960 Dr. Scagliotta co-founded the Midland School, a private special school for developmentally disabled children and served as its executive director for thirty-four years.  Under his leadership the school enrollment grew from three students to two hundred forty five.  As an adjunct professor on the staff of Rutgers University he taught courses in educational methods and materials and administration and supervision of special education.

In order to disseminate the mission of special education and the behavioral management of the learning disabled he with Midland School parents, NJ State education personal, a local psychological clinic, and the Psychological Department of Rutgers organized a yearly Symposium to inform parents and professionals of current practices, research and development.  On the Douglass College campus cooperating with the Psychological Clinic Dr. Scagliotta was instrumental in establishing a satellite Midland School special education program that now functions independently under the auspices of the University.

In addition, he engaged in a private practice rendering psycho-educational advisory and counseling services.  He was an external moderator in special education at the Guild Teachers College, Australia.  He also served as consulting editor to Academic Therapy Publications, California, and a New Jersey representative to Montessori Institute of America and an advisor to the Parent Education Training Center, Alexander, Virginia.

A charter member of the New Jersey Association of Private School and Agency for the Handicapped (ASAH) he served as the first vice president.  In 2003 he was voted into the Bound Brook High School initial Hall of Fame.  Upon retirement he continued to serve the Midland School as director emeritus on the Midland School Board and the Midland Foundation.

As one of three charter members of the Manville Public Library Association, Dr. Scagliotta was instrumental in its initial organization, successful growth and further development.  It was his professional prowess that resulted in the identification and employment of the first librarian.

An avid writer Dr. Scagliotta authored ten books and contributed over fifty special education articles to various professional publications.  He was a noted lecturer nationally and abroad.  In 1987 he received the New Jersey Monthly Magazine Pride Award for outstanding contributions to the State of New Jersey in Education.  The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Department of New Jersey presented him with an outstanding service award for contributions to the children of veterans.  For his work with the New Jersey Association of Private Schools and Agencies for the Handicapped he received the presidential award for dedicated and outstanding services to handicapped children.

Dr. Scagliotta was a communicant of St. Mary's Byzantine Catholic Church, Hillsborough, NJ.

His loving wife of fifty-eight years, Louise Maimone predeceased him.  Surviving are his two daughters, Janice Elaine, at home and Marlene Amy Orlando of Chandler, Arizona and her husband Patsy John.  He also leaves many nieces and nephews including both great and great/great.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a memorial visitation at Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835 on Tuesday, March 27 from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m.  The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home.
