Obituary

Somerset, NJ- Eugenio Suarez Alvarez, 91, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, September 13, 2023 at home with his loving family in his presence.  He was born in Santa Eufemia, Celanova, Ourense, Espana, the son of the late Crisanto Alvarez Mendez and Concepcion Suarez Rodriguez.  Eugenio had three older siblings, Antonio, Pilar, and Obdulia, all of which have passed away.  As a child, Eugenio's early years were spent working his family's farm, supporting his town's church as an alter boy, and entertaining his community with music and mischief.  Raised during the Spanish Civil War, Eugenio's early life was challenging yet despite those difficult times, he emerged as an enthusiastic and adventurous young adult.  That spirit led him to immigrate to the United States of America in 1950 becoming a resident of Newark, NJ and citizen of the United States.  He later resided in Kenilworth, NJ before settling to Somerset in 2002.

In 1958, Eugenio's life was changed forever when he met and married the love of his life, Blanca Rosa Alfaro.  Their 65-year marriage, grounded in mutual love and respect, blessed us with two children Eugene and Diane, five grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Eugenio's greatest joys in life were engaging with, and entertaining, his family and friends.  A master at preparing traditional Spanish meals, Eugenio was, without a doubt, unmatched at the barbecue and grill.  Always the center of attention, and fueled by his kind heart and tireless sense of humor, Eugenio was one of those individuals who lit up every room he occupied.  His "magic" was not limited to humans as every animal he encountered (dog, cat or other) reacted excitedly to his presence.

Eugenio's work life in the US was highlighted by 45 years of dedicated employment with A Gross Company/Witco Inc based in Newark.  A proud member of local Spanish./Galician community, Eugenio enjoyed his participation with Centro Ourensano Social Club in Newark.  His faith was important to him and he attended mass at Christ the Redeemer Parish (Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church) in Manville, NJ.

Eugenio will be deeply missed and is survived by his beloved wife of sixty-five years, Blanca Rosa (nee Alfaro) Alvarez; two loving children, Eugene A. Alvarez and his wife Maria M. Alvarez of Bedminster, NJ and daughter, Diane C. Guzman and her husband, Manuel Guzman; five cherished grandchildren, Michael G. Alvarez, Nicole M. Mansfield, Cristian L. Alvarez, Alexander J. Guzman, and Gabrielle C. Guzman; three adored great grandchildren, Amelia Jane, Quinlan Robert, and Everly Rose; one great grandchild on the way; and many nieces and nephews.
