Hillsborough, NJ – Hanna Josefa (nee Kowalska) Maj, 94, entered into eternal life on Sunday, December 1, 2024 at her home in Hillsborough. Born in Warsaw, Poland, she was the daughter of Josef Kowalski (d. 1944) and Janina Kochanowska (d. 1970). As a child, she lived through the invasion and occupation of Warsaw during World War II and the loss of her father in that conflict. With her mother and sister, she was sent to a labor camp in Germany. She met her future husband, Wladyslaw, at the camp; they immigrated to the United States, where they were married in Jenneret, Louisiana on December 25, 1949. They resided in Raritan, NJ before moving to Hillsborough in 1959.

Hanna raised seven children, and at the same time, she worked full-time for nearly 30 years for RCA Corporation and Lockheed as part of their Trident, Poseidon, and Fleet Ballistic Missile Programs. After her children were grown, she devoted the next 30 years as a caregiver for her disabled husband until his passing in 2010. Throughout it all, she maintained a witty sense of humor. She was an avid gardener, enjoyed cooking and baking for her family, and enjoyed family gatherings. Once retired, she stayed active by exercising regularly and attending computer-literacy classes. Hanna was a devout Roman Catholic and a faithful communicant of Christ the Redeemer Parish in Manville, NJ.

Besides her husband, Hanna was predeceased by her sister, Krystyna; two sons, Henry and Walter, Jr.; and grandson, Daniel. She was also deeply saddened by the recent loss of her loyal emotional support dog of 16 years, Muszka.

Hanna is survived by her loving children, Stanley Maj of Lebanon, KY, Ann and her husband Robert Gardner of Lebanon, NJ, Barbara and her husband Jack Giameo of Toms River, Joseph Maj and his wife Karen of Myrtle Beach, SC, and Teresa Maj of Hillsborough. She also leaves behind nine cherished grandchildren, John, Michael, Richard, Karen, Patrick, Jason, Christopher, Marisa, and Alexa; 15 adored great-grandchildren; dear sister-in-law, Krystyna and her son Henry Kozlowski; and dear niece, Maria Kozic.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a viewing at Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835 on Friday, December 6, from 3-7 p.m. and on Saturday, December 7, from 8-8:30 a.m. Funeral services will begin at the funeral home on Saturday, December 7 at 8:30 a.m. followed by a 9:00 a.m. funeral mass at Christ the Redeemer Parish in Manville.
