Somerset, NJ – Robert Francis Schumm, Sr., 68, passed away on Saturday, August 11, 2012 at Somerset Medical Center in Somerville. Born in Jamaica, Queens, New York, son of the late John Henry and Elizabeth Agnes (Bruhns) Schumm, Bob spent the majority of his life on Long Island, NY. He moved to New Jersey fourteen years ago, settling in Somerset in 2010.

Retiring in 2006, Bob was employed as a Computer Engineer for Verizon, working out of New York City for forty-three years. He was a 3rd Degree Knight with the Knights of Columbus in Queens, and was active as a youth counselor with the local 4-H club where he enjoyed helping children build and display model trains. One of his greatest pleasures, along with his family, was "tinkering" as a woodworker and builder to maintain and fix things. From fashioning a Harry Potter wand for his grandson to taking apart the dashboard in his car to repair the radio to reconstructing a broken patio umbrella, with a little assurance and motivation, Bob's family could count on him to fix virtually anything.

Besides his parents, Bob was predeceased by his special and devoted aunt Marie Bruhns who passed away in September 1998.

Bob is survived by his loving wife Alice (Discount/Laflam) Schumm and their two children; Rob and his wife Ellen of Mendham Township, NJ and Marianne Schumm-Harvey and her husband Bob of Upper Pottsgrove, PA. His grandchildren, Kira and William will miss their "Opa", and Jacob, Aleesa, and Lucas will miss their "Poppy". Bob also leaves behind his brother John and sister-in-law Carol Schumm of Gaithersburg, MD and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews as well as many extended family and friends.

A Memorial gathering will be held at Fucillo & Warren Funeral Home, 205 South Main Street, Manville, NJ 08835 on Sunday, August 19, 2012 from 11:30am to 12:30pm – with a short prayer service beginning at 12:00pm. Following the service, the Schumm family invites friends and relatives to gather at the Terrace Room of the Courtyard by Marriott at 250 Davidson Avenue, Somerset, NJ for continued commemoration and refreshments.

At the family's request, dress for the services is smart casual – ties are optional.
